What Makes Corrugated Board Strong?
Custom corrugated boxes get their strength from structure, not just thickness. A wavy fluted medium is glued between two flat sheets of linerboard, and that fluted layer is what does the work. It turns a flat sheet into something that resists crushing from the top and holds its shape under load.
That's also why corrugated comes in different strengths that aren't just "thicker" or "thinner". It's how many of these three-layer sandwiches are stacked together.

Single Wall, Double Wall, or Triple Wall?
This is the real strength decision, and it's separate from flute size. You can combine any flute type with one, two, or three layers of fluting.
Double wall corrugated boxes are the middle ground worth knowing about: if a single wall feels marginal for your product's weight but you don't want the bulk and cost of a triple wall, a double wall is very often the right answer.
What ECT Actually Means
You'll see ECT (edge crush test) on corrugated spec sheets, usually as a number like 32 or 44, with no explanation of what it means. It measures how much stacking pressure the board can take on its edge before it buckles, in plain terms, how many identical boxes can be stacked on top of it in a warehouse or truck before the bottom box starts to crush.
A higher ECT number means more stacking strength. This matters more than most buyers realise if your product ships palletized or sits in a warehouse for any length of time, the box at the bottom of the stack is under real, sustained pressure, not just a one-time knock.

How Flute Size & Wall Strength Work Together
Flute size (E-flute or B-flute) and wall count are two separate decisions that combine, a single wall E-flute box suits a light branded mailer, while a double wall B-flute box suits a heavier shipped product.
