Custom Pharmaceutical Packaging & Medicine Boxes
Tamper-evident cartons on medical-grade board, built to carry serialization codes and dosage information clearly. Manufactured and delivered across the USA.

What Makes Pharmaceutical Packaging Different?
Custom pharmaceutical packaging is the printed carton that holds a medication's blister pack, bottle, or vial, made to exact dimensions and printed with regulated information. Unlike ordinary retail packaging, it must provide tamper evidence, protect the product from moisture and light, and carry the dosage, warning, batch, and barcode data required for legal sale.
In most categories, packaging is a marketing decision. In pharma it is a safety system with a marketing role attached. Four things have to be true of every carton, and none of them are optional:
It has to prove it hasn't been opened
Glue-end closures and perforated strips leave visible damage if a carton is tampered with. Tamper evident packaging is what allows a pharmacist and a patient to trust what they are handling.
It has to protect the medication
Drugs degrade with moisture, light, and rough handling. Medical-grade SBS with an aqueous or moisture-resistant coating preserves stability through storage, transit, and shelf life.
It has to stay legible at small point sizes
Dosage, expiry, batch numbers, and warnings are frequently set in tiny type on a small panel. Print quality here is a compliance requirement, not an aesthetic preference.
It has to be identical every run
Healthcare supply chains cannot tolerate batch-to-batch variance. The same carton, run after run, matters as much as the specification itself.
Shahwaze Packaging manufactures pharmaceutical packaging boxes for tablets, capsules, syrups, vials, and supplements. We supply contract manufacturers, pharmacies, healthcare distributors, and supplement brands across the USA, from clinical pilot batches through full commercial distribution.
Serialization & DSCSA-Ready Carton Artwork
Since November 2023, every prescription drug package sold in the United States must carry a unique product identifier under the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). This is not a labelling detail, it changes how the carton has to be designed.

What the regulation requires
Four data elements must appear on the smallest saleable unit: the National Drug Code (NDC) embedded in a GTIN, a unique serial number, the lot number, and the expiration date. These are encoded in a 2D DataMatrix barcode and also printed in human-readable text. The carton is where this lands — if sold as a carton of ten vials, the outer carton carries the identifier, the individual vials do not need to be serialized.

Why it changes the carton design
A DataMatrix code has to be printed with enough contrast and enough clear space around it to scan reliably at a pharmacy counter. Codes are graded A to F against the ISO/IEC 15415 standard, and a low grade can trigger automatic rejection on the packing line. A barcode squeezed into a corner beside a busy graphic will fail.
What We Plan Before Print
Three things get designed in from the start rather than fixed at the end:
A dedicated barcode panel
A clear area sized for the DataMatrix plus its quiet zone, the blank margin the scanner needs on all four sides. Brand graphics stay out of this area entirely.
Print surface with the right contrast
Dark code on a light, uncoated or matte-coated area. Heavy gloss and metallic finishes reduce scan reliability, so we keep them off the barcode panel.
Space for human-readable text
The same four data elements must also appear as printed text. This is frequently forgotten until proofing, and it needs real panel space at a legible size.

Dietary Supplement & Nutraceutical Packaging
Supplements are not medicines, and packaging them as though they were wastes money. Dietary supplement packaging sits under different regulation, sells through different channels, and competes on shelf appeal in a way prescription products never do.
We manufacture nutraceutical packaging for capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, and liquid supplements, including bottle cartons, sachets, and multi-unit packs. The board and finish are chosen for the retail environment; the panel layout is built around the Supplement Facts requirements.

Which Carton Structure Fits Your Product?
Structure is driven by the primary container and by how the carton runs on your packing line. Competitors list styles without explaining the fit, which is how brands end up with cartons that jam on the line or fail a drop test.
Two practical points buyers often raise late. First, the patient information leaflet adds real internal volume, and a carton sized without allowing for it will not close cleanly. Second, if you run automated cartoning equipment, the structure has to suit the machine, not just the product.
Medical-Grade Materials & Print Specifications
Pharma packaging lives on two things: material purity and print legibility. Neither is negotiable, and both are decided before anything goes to press.
Board selection
Medical-grade SBS at 18–24pt is the standard for prescription cartons. It gives a bright, uniform print surface for small mandatory text, holds a crisp fold, and stacks predictably in a warehouse. Kraft and FSC-certified paperboards suit supplements and eco-positioned healthcare brands. Corrugated handles shipping and multi-unit cases. For moisture-sensitive products, aqueous or lamination coatings add a barrier without compromising recyclability as much as full plastic lamination would.
Printing for legibility, not just branding
Mandatory text on a pharma carton is often set at small point sizes, which makes print quality a compliance issue rather than an aesthetic one. We print at high resolution with tight registration, and we check that dosage text, warnings, and barcode contrast survive the finish that has been chosen. Variable data printing handles batch numbers, expiry dates, and serialization codes where these are applied at the carton stage. Full-colour CMYK and Pantone matching cover brand elements, with finishes including aqueous coating, matte and gloss lamination, soft-touch, spot UV, security foil, and embossing.
For accessibility, we can add embossed tactile elements and Braille on request, a requirement in several export markets and a growing expectation in the US.
Complete Pharma Packaging Solutions
Most brands need more than one component. Our pharma packaging solutions cover the full set so everything matches:

Primary carton
The retail or dispensing unit, built to your container dimensions and serialization requirements.

Leaflets and outserts
Patient information leaflets folded to fit the carton, with the folded thickness accounted for so it still closes cleanly.

Inserts and fitments
Die-cut card or foam that holds vials, ampoules, syringes, and devices in position so nothing shifts in transit.

Shipper cases
Corrugated outer cases for distribution, with case-level barcode panels where aggregation is used.

Display cartons
Counter and shelf units for OTC and pharmacy retail, printed to match the primary carton.
How We Run a Pharma Project
Regulated packaging fails most often at the handover points, so the process is deliberately structured. As a pharmaceutical packaging manufacturer producing all of this under one roof, we keep colour, board, and print quality consistent across the set:
Specification
We take your primary container dimensions, leaflet size, line requirements, and any serialization or child-resistant obligations.
Structural design and dieline
We produce a dieline sized around the container plus leaflet, with the barcode panel and compliance area already positioned.
Proof and prototype
A digital proof for artwork, then a physical prototype you can fill, close, and test on your line before committing to a run.
Production with QA
Manufacturing against the approved specification, with checks on board, colour, registration, and dimensional accuracy on every run.
Repeat orders from stored dielines
Your specification stays on file, so a reorder six months later matches the original rather than drifting.

Pharmaceutical Packaging FAQs
It has to do four things at once: prove it has not been tampered with, protect the medication from moisture and light, keep mandatory dosage and warning text legible at small sizes, and stay identical from batch to batch. Custom pharmaceutical packaging is a safety system, not just a container.
Yes. Since November 2023, prescription drug packages sold in the US must carry a unique product identifier, NDC in a GTIN, serial number, lot number, and expiration date, in a 2D DataMatrix barcode plus human-readable text. The carton needs a dedicated panel with adequate quiet zone and print contrast for the code to scan reliably.
No. We manufacture cartons designed to accommodate serialization artwork and coding. Generating serial numbers and applying codes sits with your packaging line or serialization provider.
Glue-end closures, perforated tear strips, and seals that cannot be opened and re-closed without leaving visible evidence. Tamper evident packaging is what allows a pharmacist or patient to trust an unopened carton.
Medical-grade SBS at 18–24pt for prescription cartons, plus kraft and FSC-certified board for supplements and eco-positioned brands, and corrugated for shipping cases. Aqueous and lamination coatings add moisture resistance where needed.
It depends on the primary container. Straight tuck end for premium retail, reverse tuck end for fast-moving SKUs, auto-lock bottom for glass bottles, glue-end where tamper evidence is required, and a fitted insert carton for vials and ampoules.
Yes — and it should be planned from the start. Leaflets and outserts add real internal volume, so we size the carton to close cleanly with the leaflet inside rather than discovering the problem at packing.
Yes — dietary supplement packaging and nutraceutical packaging for capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, and liquids, with panel layouts built around Supplement Facts rather than drug facts.
